What should we do with all the photos we take?
Yes, that’s me, taking a self-portrait in a dirty hubcap. And probably wondering what I’ll do with the photo. Maybe use it on Substack? (Photo: Author) It goes without saying (but I’ll say it anyway): digital photographers produce a lot of photos. I’m not an especially prolific photographer, but even I produce something like 10,000 images a year. Photographers who regularly shoot sports, birds or other fast-moving action probably produce double, triple or quadruple that numbe

Why am I here?
Writing, I mean…let’s not get too existential… Yep, that’s me, the man in the mirror. Does the frame around the mirror look like a circle from a Venn diagram? Maybe it’s just me. (Photo: Author) (Note: This article was originally published on my Substack, Gone Creative . You can visit and subscribe there if it's more convenient for you. Otherwise, happy to have you here!) I don’t want to brag, but last week I hit a major milestone: a dozen subscribers on Substack. That might

Fighting word wanking with Dorothy Parker and Steven Pressfield
Those wankers don’t stand a chance That’s right…these are all ideas people word wanked about instead of writing about…going cheap, just for today… (Photo: Author) Are you a word wanker? Many writers are. But word wanking could sabotage your writing…. A few years ago, I found myself in thrall to the idea that there was some secret formula to make writing easier. Not that I had a problem writing. I had been writing for years, personally and professionally. At that time, I was c

Shades of Red: Images of Southwest Utah
Today I'm releasing a collection of photographs I took in the fall of 2022 while visiting Southwest Utah. Rather than displaying the images one by one on social media, where they would at best be quickly viewed then forgotten in favour of cat videos, I chose to create this collection so the images could be enjoyed at leisure and as a group.

Kootenay Road Trip 2020 Scenes: New Denver Canoe
One of our first stops in the Kootenays was the Village of New Denver. Once a bustling mining town, today New Denver is quiet and pretty, straddling Carpenter Creek on the northeast shore of Slocan Lake. It is the ideal place for a quiet canoe ride on a warm evening in late summer.
